Berlin 2017

Day 1

On Sunday the 23rd of July 2017 we arrived in Berlin. After we checked in at our hotel we took the train to Friedrichsstraße, where we ate at "Berliner Republik". As we finished our meal, we walked along the river spree back to our hotel.
On the first day we saw the Regierungsviertel with the Reichstag building, the Bunedskanzleramt and so on. Befor we got back to our hotel, we stoped at the "Haus der Kulturen der Welt/House of the World's Cultures" for a drink.
After that we let the day end at the hotel lobby.

Day 2

On our second day in Berlin we decided to make a hop on - hop off tour.
Our first stop was at Charlottenburg, where we visited the castle and stroled through the garden. After that our next stop was the KaDeWe, this is a very big shopping mall. I was very unenthusiastic from the KaDeWe, because there were mostly very expensive and luxurious brands.
Then we hopped off at Potsdamer Platz and went to Checkpoint Charlie. There was the former border between west and east Berlin during the Cold War. On our way there we came across the Topography of Terror, where you can see a part from the wall of Berlin.
For dinner we went back to the Sony center near the Potsdamer Platz. After dinner we got back to thw bus and stopped at 'Unter den Linden' and hurried to the Reichstags building, because we had an appointment for visiting the cupola on top of the building. Because we haven't had much time, we only stopped for one foto at the Brandenburg Gate.
We arrived in time at the Reichstags building and after the security check we got right into the building and on top of it. There you have a nice view over Berlin. You can get also get an audio guide. The best right after the overview was that all this was for free!
And again we let the day end at the hotel lobby.

Day 3

On the 3rd day we visited all the sights we could only see from the bus yesterday.
We went to the Hackesche Höfe first. There are 8 courtyards with shops and art galeries. After that we continued our journy to the sSt. Mary's Church at the Alexanderplatz. At this place you can see the St. Mary's Church, the "Fernsehturm" (television tower), the Neptune fountain and the "Rotes Rathaus" (Red City Hall).
Then we moved on to the Nikolaiviertel. A beautiful district with many old houses. Most of them were destroed in the second world war, but they were rebuilt in the old style in 1987. If you want to eat something there I can recommend the restaurant "Zum Nußbaum". It is one of the oldest restaurants in Berlin.
The next sight we visited was the Berlin Cathedral. It's a really impressive building and was also mostly destroyed in World War II. Other than the visit in the Reichstags building you have to pay for the entrance here. But in my opinion this is totally worth it! The inside of the Cathedral is much more impressive as the outside. The inside, the crypt, the museum and the Dome walkway are included in the price. You have to go up about 266 stairs till you reach the top, but you will get rewarded. The overview is amazing!!
After the dome we went to the 'Gendarmenmarkt', 'Unter den Linden' and the Brandenburger Tor. At the Gendarmenmarkt you can see the "Konzerthaus" (conzert hall), the French and the German Cathedral. Even there most of the buildings got badly destroyed in World War II, but nowadays they were all restored again. The boulevard 'Unter den Linden' (under the linden trees) runs from the City Palace to the Pariser Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. Noumerous of the Berlin sights and landmarks are linked with this avenue.
Our last stop for this day was the Brandenburg Gate. It's the entrance to 'Unter den Linden' and was built in the 18th century. The Brandenburg Gate was used as a city gate. After World War II the Gate became part of the Berlin Wall. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the Brandenburg Gate stands for freedom and the desire to unify the city of Berlin.

Day 4

Day 4 of our journey was a rainy day. So we decided to take a regular bus (100). On this day we only stopped at the "Breitscheidplatz".
Because of the bad weather it was no fun running outside, so we decided to go back to the hotel. As we arrived there we took a short nap and met us again at the hotel lobby for a drink.

Day 5

Day 5 was the compleat opposite from day 4! The weather was so nice, so we decided to visit the castle San Souci in Potsdam.
At first we made a coach tour around the grounds. It lasted about an hour with a short break for about 15 minutes at the new palais.
"Story San Souci?"
As we wanted to go to the garden beneath San Souci it suddenly started to rain again. We hurried to the next restaurant an ate something there. As we finished our meal the rain was gone and the sun was shining again. Unfortunatelly the park is so big and we were short of time, we only saw a small part of the garden.
Back in Berlin we made a boat trip at the river spree. We barely made it to the last tour. But the advance was that there were only a few people at the boat.
My parents and I decided to eat a currywurst before we pack our luggage. After everything was finished we met with my grandparents at the lobby for our last Berliner Weiße mit Schuss for a long time!
The end of our holidays made a night stoll to the Brandenburg Gate. As we left the hotel not even the thunderstome could stop us. Fortunately it cleared away quickly. The Reichstags building and the Brandenburg Gate were beautifully illuminated! There was also a film event in the "Regierungsviertel" about the history of germany and expecially Berlin.
Our night walk back to the hotel beneath the river spree was the end of our holidays in Berlin.

Fazit:

It was my first time in Berlin and I have to say that I love this city! I've never imagined that a city could be so beautiful (even without mountains ^^). I know that there are some districts that are not so beautiful, but Berlin Mitte was. There was so much green within the city. Now I understand a friend of mine, who loves Berlin too. But unlike her I would never move to Berlin, because I would miss the mountains.
